Darebin City Brass – Preston Band, is one of Australia’s most recognised A Grade Brass Bands.
Preston Band has been serving the community of Darebin for over 75 years, forming as Preston Citizens Band in 1934. During the pre-war years, the band’s name was changed to Preston Municipal Band and became Darebin City Brass in 1994.The Band is affiliated with the Victorian Band’s League and is strongly supported by the City of Darebin, continuing to serve the community through concerts in the local area,participation in the Darebin Arts Festival, Darebin Music Feast and in other cultural activities both in the city and the wider community. It is involved each year with the Darebin Returned Services Club participating in their Anzac and Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Preston Band regularly competes in the Australian National, Victorian State and regional championships. The band has also competed twice in New Zealand and once in the United Kingdom.
Combined with the strong links to the community, the band is also famous for nurturing younger talent into quality brass players. Jack Kelly, OAM, has co-ordinated the junior program for many decades and is a legend of the Victorian brass band scene.
