From July 2 - 6, the Preston Band proudly represented Darebin City Brass at the 2025 New Zealand Brass Band Championships in Christchurch. Performing in the stunning Christchurch Town Hall, the band gave it their all across the contest weekend.
It was fantastic to see so many Preston members stepping up in the solo competition, and just as inspiring to witness the incredible camaraderie from fellow band members — whether quietly cheering in the room or watching the livestream from afar . That spirit of support and friendship truly reflects the heart of the banding community.
A huge congratulations to our principal euphonium player James Blackford, who not only won the Open Euphonium section but also placed 3rd in the Champion of Champions – what a legend!
Thanks to conductor Andrew Snell, the band was pushed to new heights – especially in their breathtaking performance of their own-choice piece, Other Lives. An unforgettable weekend all round.
A massive congratulations to all the other bands who took part in the competition, and to those who placed – the standard of performance was truly inspiring. A special congratulations to Wellington Brass Band, who once again took out the top honours – an incredible achievement and testament to their continued excellence. And a big thank you to Brassbanned for making it possible for supporters around the world to tune in via livestream!
